The Parable of The Award-Winning Tomato

How to achieve your goal of wealth

They strolled for a minute without speaking.

“Do you have a plan to overcome your situation?”

“I don’t even know where to begin,” Jared admitted. “I feel trapped. I have daily responsibilities and I can’t handle any more on my plate.”

“What are the obstacles holding you hostage?”

Jared thought about it. “I think my obstacles are time and money. I have neither, and so I’m powerless to change. It’s harder to get ahead compared to previous generations. You’ll call it an excuse, but I barely break even.”

“I am not saying that prosperity is easy,” acknowledged the Wealthy

Gardener, “but isn’t it true that in every garden, we always find several tomato plants that are outproducing the others?”

Jared seemed annoyed as he thought about it. “Okay, what the hell does that mean?”

The Wealthy Gardener chuckled. “You may not be aware that I’ve won Best Tomato at the county fair for the past two years. And the way to get an award-winning tomato is by pruning the plant’s branches. I constantly pinch off the nonfruiting branches, and I leave only one tomato on the plant.”

“Isn’t that fascinating?” Jared snorted.

“And you may be interested to know that in the garden of life, the same rule applies to growing our wealth. The people who win prosperity give their strength, energy, and attention to just one fruit—their personal net worth.”

“And how am I supposed to do that?”

“Prune the nonfruiting branches,” said the Wealthy Gardener. “Cut the frivolous and mundane pursuits that waste time. Focus your power. If you want to control your affairs, you’ll need all your energy going to one tomato.”

“You mean spend all my life in pursuit of money?”

“If wealth be the goal, get your mind off distractions and onto your one thing. Those who acquire wealth in the future must prune the nonfruiting branches today. You choose the goal, but then make it your one tomato. And as for choosing a life of prosperity, it’s not so bad for you. In the end, wealth can be a tasty tomato.”
